How to make a cover for a well: an overview of 3 design options

A well in a country house is both a source of cool clean water and a decorative element. If the design style of the well is a single whole with other buildings, the site looks more attractive. It is not for nothing that a considerable number of summer residents place purely decorative wells on their site - wooden, decorated with carvings, with improvised flower beds on the lid, etc. The cover for a well with your own hands can be made of various materials - wood, metal, plywood, plastic. To prevent debris, insects, small animals from getting into the well, the lid must be tightly fixed, durable, provide air flow and, of course, be beautiful.

Wood is the most successful material for making a well cover: it looks beautiful, is an environmentally friendly material, and has excellent performance characteristics. The wooden cover, if you use decorative elements, looks the most aesthetically pleasing.

In this case, the well is sheathed with a narrow beam, a bench and a lid are made of it - a beautiful practical design has turned out. For convenience, hinged doors with handles are made in the lid - so that each time it does not fold back completely

Option # 1 - plain wood lid

A decorative cover for a well made of wood can be made independently, the manufacturing process is quite simple. For the lid, you need to pick up solid wood - elm, aspen will do. Pine can also be used, but the wood is softer. The size and shape of the product are determined according to the type of construction and the neck of the well.

The easiest way is to make a cover in the form of a hatch. You will need nails, hinges, measuring tools, dry boards with grooves, handles, hinges, six blocks (20-30 cm for one cover), a hacksaw, a thick rubber belt, screwdrivers, a hammer for making.

It is better to double the wooden cover. This is done so that it does not freeze in winter. You can make a hinged or removable cover - which one it will be, determine when drawing up a work plan.

Hinged well cover with a comfortable wooden handle - practical and easy to manufacture. The hinges and carved handle give the simple design a decorative look

Work begins with the lathing device and the necessary measurements. In order for the hatch to sit firmly in the neck, it is imperative to make a crate. It is made from bars according to the size of the neck. For covering the structure, you can use a tes. Metal hinges are attached to it. The hinges can be replaced with a rubber strap - one end of it is nailed to the lid, the other to the work.

The simplest version of a well cover is a lathing with timber, wooden boards. In cold winter conditions, it is recommended to make two such covers and lay insulation between them, this will help the water not freeze

The main functions of the second sash (if you have chosen this option) are additional protection and gap bridging, if any. For strength, the cover in the center from the bottom is reinforced with a bar. A pair of identical caps is made - lower and upper. The lower one is installed at the bottom of the neck, the upper one - at the top. In winter, a straw pillow is placed between them for insulation. If in your area the temperature in winter drops to -20 degrees or more, a double cap is required - otherwise the water will freeze.

The simplest handles for a wooden lid are bars stuffed parallel to each other. But for greater convenience and aesthetics, you can use ready-made wooden or metal handles. As for the castle, this is a matter of personal choice. Some use shut-off devices to keep the well safer when the owners are away.

After making the lid, you can think about how to decorate the well. There are two traditional options: to make a decorative house on poles or to install a flat roof of a round or rectangular shape. The roof can be gable in the shape of a house, flat, round, inclined - at your discretion. You can use various materials to decorate it - natural and bituminous tiles, metal tiles, vines and vines, straw, boards, slate, carved decor, etc.

Option # 2 - PCB cover

The cover for the well can be made of PCB and metal corners. To make it, you need textolite, sealant, profile pipes, cement, handles and hinges, tape measure, welding machine, bolts, screws, grinder, screwdrivers and a hammer.

Textolite is a durable laminated material impregnated with resins. It is not difficult to process it, and such a cover can serve for a long time.

Using a tape measure, we make measurements, cut the metal corners at an angle of 45 °. The resulting four segments are welded into a quadrangle. For the strength of the frame, the corners are welded both from the outside and from the inside, traces of welding are removed with a grinder.

We cut the profile pipes so that their length is one centimeter shorter than the length of the corners. In a metal frame, we insert pipe segments along the perimeter of the base, and weld them to the base, the seams are processed with a grinder.

Then two plates are made of textolite, corresponding in size to the frame. A layer of insulation is laid between the plates, then they will need to be fastened together with self-tapping screws, the seam must be treated with a sealant. To connect the resulting cover and frame, we use hinges, which can be installed using bolts or welding.

The cover for the PCB well is ready. For installation on a well, formwork is made of boards, everything is cemented. After installation, the frame with the lid is covered with a layer of cement. To make it easier to use the lid, a handle is screwed to it. You can leave the structure as it is, or you can paint it to give it a more aesthetic look.

Alternatively, you can make or buy a ready-made plastic cover. It can be used temporarily or permanently if winters are not too cold in your area.

You can also use stainless steel to make the cover, but this option is more suitable for a well made of reinforced concrete rings.

Option # 3 - top for a well in the shape of a house

The lid can also be made in the form of a wooden house (gable roof). First, a frame is made using the same technology as a gable roof, but of appropriate dimensions. For access to water, a single-leaf door is made on the front slope of the house. The frame is made of wood, it can be painted or sheathed with any roofing material - you get a very aesthetic decorative cover for the well.

The head for a well in the shape of a house is not only a cover option, but also an excellent decorative element. In this case, the house is made of smooth timber, the roof is finished with bituminous tiles, the structure with hinged double doors and comfortable handles is a reliable protection for the source of moisture

A hand-made wooden cover for a well is not much inferior to a finished one - it is a practical design to protect the source of moisture from weather conditions and debris. Having made it yourself, you will save money and also try yourself as a designer.

The options considered give an idea of how you can make a cover for a well yourself. Making it will not take much of your time, and your well will receive reliable protection.

We make a cover for the well ourselves

The well on the suburban area is a source of clean cool water, and this structure is also decorative. If the well is decorated in the same style as other buildings, your site will get a more attractive look. It is not for nothing that many summer residents have exclusively decorative wells on their plots: wooden with carvings or with improvised flower beds instead of a cover. You can make your own cover for the well from different materials:

  • plastic
  • wood
  • metal
  • plywood, etc.

To prevent insects, debris and small animals from falling into the well, the cover must be made reliable and durable, but so that it provides a good air flow. Let's consider several possible options for creating covers.

Wood is one of the best materials for making a well cover. The wood has an attractive appearance and is environmentally friendly, and also has good performance characteristics. When using decorative elements, the wooden cover gets a very aesthetic look.

Diy well cover

It is hard to imagine a dacha or a country house that does not have a water supply system or a well. Indeed, without water, especially in summer, in the sweltering heat, a comfortable human existence is impossible. If you are a lucky owner of a well, this article is for you.

Everyone knows that a well is not only a source of tasty, thirst-quenching water, but also an important architectural element of the suburban area as a whole. Confirmation of this is the huge number of summer residents who decorate their wells with intricate decorative elements, decorated with carvings, forging or drawings on the surface. If your well is not one of the wells-works of art, do not despair, because this "misunderstanding" is easily corrected. Have patience, the desire to change your well and imagination, and in just a couple of hours your well will have a completely different, cozy and beautiful look.

How to decorate a well in the country? There are a lot of options, but the most common and easily feasible is the creation of a well cover made of wood, textolite, or made in the form of a miniature house.

Option one - a cover for a well made of wood. Why wood? Wood is an environmentally friendly material, quite durable and easy to work with. In addition, the well cover made with decorative elements is not only practical, but also very beautiful.

For its manufacture, you should prepare solid wood, such as aspen, nails, metal hinges and the necessary tools.

Advice: if you live in a cold region, where the air temperature in winter drops below -20 degrees, we recommend making such a cover double and insulated to avoid freezing of water in the well.

The creation of such a cover begins with measuring the well and determining the size of the cover, after the crate is made according to the size of the well and sheathed with pre-prepared boards, metal loops or a rubber belt are attached to the resulting structure - one end to the cover, and the other to the well.

Option two - a PCB cover. To create it, prepare the following materials in advance: the textolite itself, metal corners, profile pipes, metal hinges, a measuring tape, bolts and the necessary tools. As you know, textolite is a durable building material consisting of many layers, characterized by ease of use and increased strength during operation.

The first step in creating such a cover will be cutting the metal corners into 4 segments of the same length after, the resulting segments must be welded together and the welding seams must be processed with a grinder. We fix the resulting metal square on the surface of the well, and sheathe it with boards, leaving a hatch for the future cover.

We also weld the obtained segments and sheathe them with textolite on top, using self-tapping screws for connection and treating the seams with a sealant. The resulting cover should fit tightly into the cover frame installed on the well and we connect the frame using metal hinges. At the end of the work, a handle is mounted on the cover for convenient use of the well.

And the last, third option for making a cover in the form of a miniature house. For this, a frame for the well is made according to the technologies described in the first version in the form of a gable roof, on one of the slopes of such a "roof" a small door is made through which water will be taken from the well.

Materials (edit)

Certain requirements are imposed on the material from which the well cover is made. They must be strong and durable, have increased resistance to various damage and deformation under the influence of moisture, as well as to the appearance of mold or rust. Light covers can be blown off by strong winds, so they must be heavy and tight.

Plastic (polymer)

The most practical and inexpensive product for use in a suburban area is plastic covers, which can be used both on plumbing and technical, and on sewer manholes. In terms of its properties, plastic is not inferior to metal counterparts, having less weight, which makes it easier to carry and install on your own by one person. Such lids can have any shape and color, various patterns and patterns, be made in the form of lattices with cells of various sizes. They are easy to fix with ordinary bolts, and such covers last up to 50 years.

Among other things, the plastic plug is universal in use both at the summer cottage and in well drilling, since polymers can be operated even in extreme conditions, this will not reduce their strength. They can withstand high temperature drops, high loads and interaction with petrochemical products, they can be installed in thermometric wells. The most durable plugs are made by pressure treatment of hot polymer sand and further cooling of the mixture.

The disadvantage of PVC well plugs is the lack of a single marking and universal size. You will have to select a product, focusing exclusively on the measurements taken.

From wood

Most often, wooden buildings are erected in summer cottages and near country cottages. The wooden well cover is mostly a decorative element, which, however, retains all its protective functions. In addition to the wooden beams, small houses with a real roof are being erected above the well, which decorate the courtyard and provide additional shade.

The advantages of the material are safety and high environmental friendliness, which is a significant advantage when installing a well with drinking water. The wood is wear-resistant and durable, it does not become moldy with sufficient treatment with protective compounds, and it certainly will not rust. The cost of a tree is not so high, and it will not be difficult to make a product from it with your own hands if you have a little work experience.

The only drawback of wooden plugs is the need to install a heater so that in winter the water surface under it is not covered with a layer of ice.

This material is not often used to make well plugs. Heavy alloys, with constant contact with water, quickly become rusty, and light stainless steel will break off in any wind and will not be able to provide the necessary fit. Most often, metal is combined with another material and only separate elements of the plug are made from it. For example, PCB floors with metal corners are often found. The most common material for metal plugs is cast iron.

Cast iron

Cast iron products are most often placed on sewer and storm water structures. They are made of cast iron alloy (SCh20) with the addition of graphite, which increases their strength and increases their service life up to 100 years. Cast iron hatches are suitable for any sewer wells and do not need to be insulated, they are extremely resistant to damage and extreme loads. At the same time, cast iron is a heavy material, structures made of it are large, expensive and difficult to transport. For these reasons, it is impractical to install them on wooden or concrete log cabins.

As a rule, reinforced concrete plugs (reinforced concrete products) are not used in private properties. They are made in cases where sewer wells are made in non-standard shapes.

However, if the sewer network of a private house is made of reinforced concrete rings, then the mounting rim for it is made of appropriate materials.

This method of decoration is preferable to use for septic tanks with fields for filtration. The stream is laid out from natural materials. It can be like one of the elements of the alpine slides. To make such a trickle, it is not necessary to take an expensive natural stone - you can buy ordinary river pebbles.

If there is no extra money for the purchase of decorative septic tanks, then you can make them yourself, using the remnants of building materials, also uprooted stumps or decorated old barrels.
