My way of planting carrots so that they sprout earlier than neighbors

My way of planting carrots so that they sprout earlier than neighbors

I noticed that if you sow dry carrot seeds, they will germinate for a very long time. After thinking a little, I invented my own method of planting.

To begin with, I put the carrot seeds in a convenient container, for example, in a plastic bottle and fill it with warm water (40 - 45 °). I add 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide, close the lid tightly and leave for 2 hours. I shake the container periodically.

Then I drain the water through a fine sieve so as not to miss the seeds. Then I rinse them with warm water and put them on paper or on a saucer. It is necessary for the seeds to swell. To do this, it is best to cover them on top with a film.

I will tell you one secret of a successful planting: so that the seeds do not stick to your hands and do not get lost in the soil, you need to sprinkle them with starch. It envelops them, they do not stick to each other and are clearly visible against the dark background of the earth. After that, the carrot seeds can be neatly spread out in the grooves, especially if, like me, you are not a fan of thinning the beds.

While the seeds are swelling and drying, I prepare the bed. True, I start doing this back in April, when the snow melts. To warm up, I cover the ground with a black film. When the soil is ready, I make the grooves. To scare off carrot flies and other pests, I spill depressions in the soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

I sow carrot seeds in wet heated grooves, this immediately stimulates them to hatch. On top of the ground, I do not just fall asleep, but be sure to compact it so that there are no voids. It is very convenient to do this with a flat wooden plank.

And one more secret: in order for the carrots to sprout faster, you can cover them not with earth, but with a loose substrate. For example, sleeping coffee or sand mixed in half with earth. It is easier for thin shoots to germinate through a loose surface. Also, coffee serves as an excellent plant food and repels pests with its smell.

I cover the bed with a film on top to maintain a warm and humid atmosphere.

With this planting, my carrots sprout very quickly and after 5 days its green tails already reach 2 - 2.5 cm in height. While the neighbors who have planted the same variety of root crops using the usual technology, it has not even hatched in the garden yet.

What gives the way to the summer resident

To an uninformed person, the idea of stripping paper and making a paste may seem like a waste of time. This is not the case: the method has many advantages:

  1. You can plan ahead how many bags of seeds to buy.
  2. Saves seeds by evenly placing them on the paper.
  3. Simplify planting operations: The planting bed can be planted 2 to 3 times faster than with the traditional approach.
  4. No need to waste time thinning carrots.
  5. Ensuring friendly seedlings due to the same depth of seed placement.

Work on the preparation of paper tapes is carried out in free time from other activities, on long winter evenings. Thanks to them, time will be freed up in the spring, which means you can have more time with the housework.

The method is not suitable for large landings. Buying seeds on paper in industrial packaging will cost a round sum, and making strips with your own hands will take an unreasonably long time. For a small garden bed, this method is best suited.

The method has only one drawback: carrots will sprout 2-3 days later than when planting in the usual way. Against the background of the advantages, this drawback is insignificant.

Secrets of growing carrots

Good afternoon, dear lovers of growing vegetables!

Every summer resident can get large juicy fruits of carrots. Compliance with the rules of agricultural cultivation allows you to get impressive yields in the middle lane, even with shortages of suitable soil. In this article, I will introduce you to some of the secrets of growing carrots outdoors.

Tips for planting, gardening and harvesting carrots from seasoned vegetable growers

1. The best soil for carrots is light loamy or sandy loam soil. Heavy soil on the site can be loosened by adding river sand and ash, and light soil can be weighted with high doses of organic matter (matured compost, peat-manure mixture, humus).

2. Siderata well structure the soil - alfalfa, clover, rye, oats, phacelia, mustard. Their powerful root system loosens the soil to a great depth, and the green mass embedded in the soil, decomposing, enriches the beds with all the nutrient compounds necessary for carrots.

3. Plant carrots in narrow beds, about 1 meter wide. Leave 20 cm between rows. Caring for such a plantation is as simple as possible, carrot tops are well ventilated, weeding and watering are carried out with ease.

4. Do not add fresh organic matter under the carrots - only rotted mullein or compost. The manure contains weed seeds that interfere with the growth of the main crop, and there are high doses of ammonia, which lead to the growth of tops to the detriment of the development of root crops in the soil. It is noticed that after the soil is enriched with fresh manure, the carrots grown in it taste bitter.

5. Sow carrots to a depth of 2 cm. Small seeds usually do not sprout when planted deeply.

6. It is most convenient to work with seeds covered with a nutritious shell. Granular planting material is much larger than usual and easier to plant individually. The distance between such seeds should be about 1 cm.

7. When planting regular carrot seeds, mix them with sand. For half a glass of dry river sand, 1 teaspoon of non-granulated seeds is taken. Pour the mixture into the grooves as if you were salt soup, moving your hand quickly.

8. Plant the seeds in moist soil, sprinkling each furrow with clean water.

9. To minimize the labor of planting maintenance after the emergence of friendly shoots, cover the soil with plant residues, for example, cut grass (15 cm layer) or compost (10 cm layer). Garden beds do not need to be loosened and weeded.

10. Plant marigolds around the perimeter of the carrot bed. The phytoncides released by these flowers into the air and soil scare off carrot flies and other crop pests.

11. After sprouting, feed the carrots with nitrogen by spilling the plantation with a solution of ammonium nitrate or carbamide (10 g of mineral fertilizer per standard bucket of water).

12. Be sure to thin out the seedlings after the leaves have reached a height of 5 cm. Leave the most powerful shoots. To provide the culture with adequate nutrition, the distance between plants should not be less than 5 cm.

13. The second thinning (the distance in a row between the bushes increases to 10 cm) is carried out in mid-July, so that by the end of summer - beginning of autumn, the root crops will grow as much as possible. Use plucked young carrots for culinary purposes or use them for summer harvesting.

14. In the first month and a half, you should organize frequent watering. Moisten the soil every other day in dry weather or 1-2 times a week in cloudy weather.

15. The number of waterings is reduced when the tops grow and shade the soil surface with their leaves.

16. Harvest carrots in dry, sunny weather. Early ripening varieties ripen by the end of August, mid-ripening ones - in early September, and late ones can be in the ground up to the 20th of September.

17. After digging up the root crops, the tops are cut to the base. Next, the carrots are dried in the sun, spread out right on the garden bed. In the evening of the same day, the fruits are sorted, packing the largest and undamaged ones in nets. The rest of the carrots are used for cooking in the first place.

18. Experienced housewives, with a plentiful harvest, freeze carrots grated on a coarse grater, laying them in small portions in separate plastic bags. Single portions are used for culinary purposes throughout the winter.

Believe that these secrets of growing carrots, when applied in practice, will help you to increase the yield of root crops in your area several times. Easy work for you in the country every season! See you!

Preparing for planting carrots

In the process of preparing for planting carrots, two important stages should be distinguished. The first is the processing of the land. The second relates directly to carrot seeds. Few people know, but they should also be treated appropriately to accelerate germination and improve growth qualities.

The best precursors for carrots are cabbage, tomatoes, legumes, cucumbers, and potatoes. It is not allowed to sow in the place where umbellate plants grew before - dill, parsley, celery, etc. Carrots are adjacent, very good with onions, it drives away carrot flies, and carrots are onions.

For now, let's focus on preparing the soil. Carrots need loose, light, permeable soil. The required minimum of additives to the soil is peat and sawdust. The soil is suitable, where manure or compost was introduced at least two years before sowing carrots. Important! Chlorine-containing fertilizers should not be applied to the ridge, the carrots will bend. Dig up the earth as best as possible, loosen - deeper. When digging, remove all weed roots, small stones and any other foreign matter. All this can negatively affect the quality of the root crops obtained. The depth of tillage should be 25 - 30 cm. You should not dig deeper, as this can provoke lengthening of the root crops.

The dug up bed is harrowed with a rake, all the lumps are carefully broken. Grooves are made up to 7 cm deep. A mixture of mineral fertilizers is laid in them, which should include nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Then the groove is mulched with humus or a special peat composition purchased in a store. Carrot seeds are planted on it. Top can be sprinkled with humus and earth. Roller the soil slightly to improve seed-to-soil contact.

After that, watering and mulching are carried out. It is advisable to put a covering material on top.

While digging the soil, you can add superphosphate in the form of granules. This complex fertilizer promotes faster growth of carrots throughout the growing season.
